THE  EUCHARISTIC  FAST.

Since November 1964 the Eucharistic fast has been reduced to one hour.  This means that food and drink may always be taken up to one hour before the time of receiving Holy Communion.  Water does not break the fast and so may be taken at any time before receiving Holy Communion.

The Canon Law of the Catholic Church indicates that no period of fasting, before receiving Holy Communion, is required for those who are sick (Canon 919.3).  Members of the Church who are looking after the sick, and wishing to receive Holy Communion with them, whenever they are unable to observe the fast without inconvenience may receive Holy Communion.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION.

(St. Alphonsus Ligouri)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.  Amen.
